Chinese Education and Technology Articles
I think it is interesting that China has taken steps to limit homework and outside tutoring. I only wonder how well it will work with the culture of shadow education that has been built in Asian countries. How else will China change its education system to reflect these new laws?
I feel that punishing parents for a child's bad behavior is going to backfire in a big way. Instead of raising productive citizens, I foresee parents becoming even more strict and oppressive toward their children. The cultural phenomenon of family honor is now being put into law and raising the stakes from social embarrassment to criminal punishment if you dishonor your family.
The article about problems with technology brought up many valid points. I think that technology is a double-edged sword. It is being pushed into classrooms as something that is required to be used, but it is not always needed for everything. Technology should enhance the learning environment and should never take over for the teacher. It takes time to find that balance and I think that every teacher should experiment with tech to see what works for their teaching style.
The Department of Educations article was intriguing. They stated all of the benefits that technology can provide for a classroom. It is also interesting to see how many online schools exist. It reminds me of Australia's 'school of the air' it truly does allow students who live in remote parts of the country to have access to quality education without having to travel long distances. Back home in Nebraska, there are some areas north of where I live that the commute to a school is an hour each way. Students that live there are often home-schooled. Online schools would give them a chance to interact with others outside of their remote location.
It's interesting when you bring up the concept of shadow education--the government censorship and political structures with the cultural values shape this type of phenomena--I bet it may be hard for people to understand how family and patriarchic values influence the individual perception of the world if they are not cultivated under this social and cultural context! I can't agree with you anymore about the technology--it is there before and it's just how we use it wisely!
